African Home (AH) was established in March 2002 by two South African female entrepreneurs Claudette Davis and Michal Leon. They were impressed with the high standard of Southern African handicraft but concerned about the high rate of poverty and unemployment in their country. They thus started African Home with a mission to open access to worldwide markets for local economically disadvantaged craftspeople.

We at African Home believe that we fulfill an important role in supporting craft groups to grow from small one or two person initiatives to groups requiring anything from 5 to 20 crafters. Throughout our existence we have worked in partnerships with crafters, innovating creative ideas towards their products’ greater market appeal and sales opportunities. We pride ourselves on the strong bonds we have built with those we support. We have done much to better both their business and lifestyle quality.

In 2004 African Home was awarded organizational Fair Trade status in light of our adherence to the following Fair Trade standards:
1. Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers.
2. Transparency and Accountability
3. Capacity Building
4. Promoting Fair Trade
5. Payment of a Fair Trade Price
6. Gender Equity
7. Working Conditions
8. Child Labour
9. The environment
10. Trade Relations
