Traditional potato printing textiles

Zambane is the Zulu word for potato, and the potato has become more than food for a group of self-employed women in Masiphumelele and Ocean View townships in Cape Town. It has become a tool of empowerment and creativity for these women, giving them a new lease on life. Using potatoes cut into various patterns, these skilled artisans block print, or potato print, textiles for home decor and fashion.

Intricate African inspired designs are stamped onto fabric, creating unique and strong artwork on fabric sold by the meter for curtains and upholstery and on finished products ranging from table linens, cushions to soft furnishings.
